The current and future measures Cleveland Police are taking to protect women and girls will be put under the spotlight.
Discussions come as part of a scrutiny meeting with Police and Crime Commissioner Steve Turner this week.
Following the tragic murder of Sarah Everard by serving police officer Wayne Couzens, Steve will be seeking assurances from the force’s senior leaders about how they are addressing violence against women and girls.
Questions will be raised about how the force will progress the national request to review all allegations of sexual misconduct, indecent exposure and domestic abuse involving police officers over the last two years.
PCC Steve Turner said: “Sarah Everard’s murder raised important questions nationally about how the sexual misconduct of police officers is monitored and how we can work to prevent such a tragedy occurring again.
“Whilst I believe our force has made good progress in this area, It’s my responsibility as the public’s representative for policing that I raise these important issues locally, as people expect every police force to take a hard look at their procedures following such a horrible crime.”
Cleveland Police will also be asked to explain how they plan to communicate or advise their workforce – and Cleveland’s residents – on the violence against women and girls agenda.
Roundtable meeting
To prepare for the meeting, Steve chaired a roundtable discussion with four of Cleveland’s domestic abuse services – Harbour, Eva Women’s Aid, Foundation and My Sister’s Place.
Steve added: “As a man, I can’t bring my own lived experience to this debate, which is why I made sure I listened carefully to these female-led services who work directly with vulnerable women and girls.
“I’m already aware that Cleveland Police is doing good work to prevent abuse of power and this is their opportunity to provide assurances to me – and to the community – that these measures are in place.”
The meeting – which takes place on Wednesday 3 November – will also examine how the force are prioritising violence against women and girls in their improvement plans.
