Pupils at a Stockton school are getting on their bikes, thanks to a PCC programme to re-purpose lost and stolen bikes.
Abbey Hill Academy, which caters for pupils from year seven to sixth form, is the latest group to benefit from the scheme.
The scheme donates bikes from police stores, whose owners cannot be traced, to groups benefitting the community.
At Abbey Hill, the 16 bikes donated to the school were upgraded in bike maintenance classes. That helped give pupils additional skills before the bikes were used as part of small cycling sessions in the school grounds.
The bikes really come into their own TGIW – or Thank Goodness it’s Wednesday.
Every Wednesday afternoon, pupils opt take part in sessions ranging from cycling to arts and crafts, where the emphasis is on fun.
First time bikers
Bill Dingwall, Abbey Hill’s Vice Principal, said: “A large proportion of our youngsters have never had the opportunity to learn to ride a bike before.
“With these donated bikes, our sessions are helping to develop balance, coordination and movement functions, stimulating the brain and creating new neural pathways as well as being therapeutic and above all fun. “
Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner Matt Storey said: “While it’s unfortunate that these bikes could not be re-united with their original owners, it’s good to see that they are getting a “second life” and helping children in the community.”

Although proud of the new pushbikes, the school is eager to hear from anyone, who can donate three wheeled bikes.
Three wheelers rarely come into police stores. They are less likely to be stolen and more likely to be traced back to their rightful owners.
The OPCC is also keen to hear from community organisations, which could benefit from a bike donation.
As the OPCC doesn’t deliver, organisations must be able to collect their bikes. They must also be able to maintain them to make sure they are fit for purpose. That’s because the OPCC cannot guarantee the bikes are roadworthy or in good condition when donated.
