Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Steve Turner has today (Monday 31 October) launched his annual consultation on how much Cleveland residents will pay towards policing next year.
He wants to know what the public feel they can afford, as well as what they think is good value for money in terms of policing, community safety and victims’ services.
PCCs throughout England and Wales are required to consult with the public every year on the ‘policing precept’.
The precept is the public’s contribution towards the cost of crime and policing services in Hartlepool, Stockton, Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland. It forms part of annual Council Tax bills paid by residents and business owners.
Members of the public can have their say via an online survey, which will be running until 5pm on Monday 12 December and at a number of face-to-face events taking place across the Cleveland area.
They will be asked how much extra they would be willing to pay for policing and community safety in Cleveland per month – ranging from £0 to £2.50.
Cleveland PCC Steve Turner said: “It is never easy to have conversations about the public element of police funding and many people are going through a particularly challenging time at the moment.
“What’s imperative to me is that I make the best decision possible based on both the needs of Cleveland Police and the feedback we receive from the public.
“That’s why I’m urging as many people as possible to complete our consultation and have their say about the police budget for the next financial year.”
